Es ist interessant, die fortschreitende Herausbildung des romantischen Geschmacks anhand der semantischen Veränderungen der Termini romantic, romanesque und romantisch zu verfolgen.
Um die Mitte
des17.Jahrhunderts ist romantic (in negativem Sinne) Synonym für "romanhaft"
("like the oldromances");ein
Jahrhundert später bedeutet es eher "trügerisch" ("romanesque")
oder"pittoresk"; diesem pittoresken Schauspiel fügt Rousseau
eine wichtige subjektive Bestimmung hinzu: den Ausdruck eines "ich weiß
nicht
was" ("je ne sais quoi"), das vage und unbestimmt ist.
Die ersten deutschen Romantiker schließlich dehnen die Reichweite des vom Terminus "romantisch" abgedeckten Undefinierbaren und Vagen aus: Er umfaßt all das, was fern, magisch und unbekannt ist vor allem die "Sehnsucht" nach diesen Dingen: Und deshalb ist jede Kunst, die eine solche Sehnsucht ausdrückt, oder vielleicht die gesamte Kunst, insoweit sie nichts anderes als eine derartige Sehnsucht ausdrückt, romantisch. Die Schönheit hört auf, eine Form zu sein, und wird zum formlosen, zum chaotischen Schönen.
